Pop Compliments

On this wonderful Wednesday we learned about complimentary colors and the work of Andy Warhol.

Mrs.Roundy taught us about complimentary colors, which when placed next to each other create the greatest contrast and really POP.
The complimentary color pairs are:

    red & green
yellow & purple
    blue & orange

Since Andy Warhol was famous for his Pop art and use of complimentary colors, the class got to
decorate their own pop cans by using complimentary color pairs.

The students were also asked to name each different flavor of pop they created. Some examples:

Bubbly Banana
Bursting Blueberry
Silly Strawberry
Good Grape

The next day, one student came in with complimentary color hair ties in her hair! How cute?
They loved this project and thought Andy Warhol was a pretty interesting guy.

Color Theory

This past Wednesday, Mrs. Roundy was back in our classroom teaching us all about color theory. We started with a great experiment where we mixed different food coloring colors in a mason jar to see what the outcome was. As the experiment was taking place we also tracked the results on our own worksheet with colored pencils. After, each student picked a color to focus on (primary or secondary color) and searched high and low through magazines to find different shades of that color. They then cut out those shades and pasted them to a piece of paper. Their creations turned out extremely unique and creative. I love them! Thanks again parents for sending in the old magazines :)

A Day of Love

Our class had a blast on Valentine's Day! We got to make adorable bags to hold all of our sweet valentine's and play a fun game of bingo. The students came to school excited and full of love. A big thanks to our room mother Dara Hoggan for planning it all and Jenn Ondrus for helping out! It was a great day!

Bubbes, Dry Ice and Balloons, OH MY!

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming "Uncle Adam" into our classroom to show us some fun science experiments. Adam is the uncle of a fellow student of ours and teaches in the science department at Weber State. We used our 5 senses to examine properties of objects like size, shape, color, weight and temperature.

It was a morning filled with "ooooos" and "ahhhhs"
as the students watched some neat stuff happen:

It was a blast! Thanks again, Adam.

Penny Lane

These first graders did such a great job on their DIBELS tests that they got a reward
...in the shape of an animal!
(Lots of excitement and movement...kind of a blurry picture)

Penny Lane got to visit our classroom last week Friday. I was on dog-sitting-duty and thought the students would love a little fury friend to join us. They were so gentle and sweet to her and she loved them! When school was over she was exhausted and took a LONG nap.

I'm so proud of how hard these guys and gals are working.
Keep reading as much as you can and kiss those brains!

100 Year Old First Graders

Our 100th day celebration has been one of my favorite days this year! The students looked FANTASTIC. We all had so much fun pretending to be 100 year-olds...many of us had sore backs, ouch! Here are some photos of our 100th day celebration:

What a hoot! They are hilarious, I just love them!
OH! How could I forget this gem of a photo?
Yep, that's 100 year old Mrs. Solipo, Ms. Mangum & Ms. M.

Last thing...
I need to thank a wonderful friend of mine, Renee Wilson, for helping me get this blog up and going. She and I met in Elementary School and are still great friends...hopefully we can be 100 year old friends someday :)
Thank you for helping this happen Renee. I couldn't have done it without your expertise!
